Ghats in Varanasi are in existence from time immemorial and there are even historical facts about some of the Ghats. Given this background, the importance of preserving and maintaining the Ghats at Varanasi at the banks of River Ganga needs no special emphasis. Over a period of time, the over bearing structure and the ground below tend to weaken due to various natural climatic conditions, ground water movements; The floods during late 2016 have caused substantial damage to some of the Ghats.

The Project of Repairs and renovation for carrying out improvements to 26 identified bathing Ghats in Varanasi in order to preserve and restore these in good condition for their continued use and maintenance of their significance has been sanctioned by NMCG under Namami Gange at a cost of Rs. 11.73 Crores.

The Contract has been awarded and the work is in Progress.
