Varanasi Nagar Nigam (Municipal Corporation) is the governing body of the city of Varanasi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The municipal corporation consists of democratically-elected members, headed by a Mayor, and administers the city's infrastructure and public services. Members from the state's leading political parties hold elected offices in the corporation. The present Mayor of VNN is Shri Ashok Kumar Tiwari. The mayor and councilors are elected to five-year terms.
Varanasi Municipal Corporation was established on January 24, 1959, as a Nagar Mahapalika under the Municipal Corporation Act of 1959, and in 1994, it was upgraded to Nagar Nigam. With 90 wards and a total area of 82 km2, the city has a dense population and witnesses a huge inflow of pilgrims and tourists. The present Municipal Commissioner is Akshat Verma, IAS. The Varanasi Municipal Corporation is responsible for the planning, development, and upkeep of the city and the delivery of civic services to its citizens.
